Animals lovers know that one of the most rewarding things in life is to take on a pet with special needs. Whether it be blind, missing a leg, or other disability, these animals give back so much love. Sometimes, this special animal connects with a furry friend who wants to help them as much as you do. That’s exactly what happened to this German Shepherd mix and his best friend, a black cat named Satin.

Robin Wagner has had Blaze, a German Shepherd/greyhound (or possibly Borzoi) mix, for years. She adopted him in 2019 but quickly noticed something was wrong. Later, she found out Blaze had some eye problems when she took him to the vet. He was blind in one eye and had lens issues in his other, causing the other eye to lose vision as well.

Being almost fully blind, poor Blaze needed some help. In steps in his big floofy cat sister Satin. The pretty black kitty was already with Robin for years at their home in Burlington, Vermont, before she adopted Blaze. Satin almost immediately welcomed Blaze into the family.

One of Satin’s favorite things is rubbing herself up against Blaze’s long legs. Unfortunately, he would often trip himself over her a lot because he couldn’t see her.

“A new creature was all up in her space and even when he could see ran into her a lot,” Wagner said.

Sounds like a scary tripping hazard for such a big dog and a small cat! After a while, though, they became inseparable.

Blaze Completely Loses His Sight

When 2020 rolled around, Blaze had to have surgery to remove his right eye due to an infection, and the other eye was his fully blind eye. The beautiful woofer lost his confidence and developed social anxiety as a result. Now Blaze, with his confidence down and anxiety up, was even more reliant on Satin, who stepped up to the challenge. But it was a little awkward initially, as the dog kept stumbling on his furry sister.

The little black cat would meow and chirp at Blaze to help him find his way or notify him where she would be if he came a little too close. Satin’s meows were as if to say, “Hey! I’m here! Please don’t smush me go the other way.” or “Hey, there’s a table here, watch yourself.” It’s like having his own kitty sonar, and that’s pretty amazing. Robin has even said that Blaze going completely blind has brought the two furry friends even closer.

“Every time he’d be walking towards her, she would meow. She would meow, and he would stop and redirect himself. I think Blaze going blind caused Satin and Blaze to become closer. While she isn’t the most affectionate and cuddliest of cats with us, she for sure tells Blaze she loves him, and it’s the most beautiful thing to see.”

Satin is the best guide kitty, and we’ve seen other cases where cats act as seeing-eye cats for their disabled friends too.
