It’s safe to say Paris Zarcilla wasn’t expecting to be thrown into the position of cat dad when he began his day on Wednesday — but it’s a task he’s glad to accept.

Zarcilla, a UK-based filmmaker, described the unexpected situation he found himself in this morning while walking into his room to fetch a sweatshirt on Twitter. There was a cat who did not belong to him curled beneath his bed. As if it wasn’t enough of a shock, she had supposedly just given birth to a brood of four kittens. His room had been transformed into a cat nursery.

Zarcilla announced the discovery in the following manner.

A less caring individual may have evicted the small family right away. But not Zarcilla.

He was instead overwhelmed with a sense of paternal obligation.

Zarcilla’s priorities shifted in an instant.

“Am I a dad now?” he wondered.

Zarcilla said he doesn’t know where the cat came from, but he thinks it may be a neighbor’s cat. She may have gotten in through the back door, which he occasionally leaves open. Anyone’s guess as to why she selected his room to give birth in is anyone’s guess.

“I am genuinely baffled,” Zarcilla wrote.

Zarcilla fell in love instantly, despite the mystery.

Zarcilla’s heart continued to expand in the string of tweets that followed. He’d discovered his calling.

“I am living for these babies. Any work commitments I have are now temporarily on hold,” he wrote. “Sorry, I’m a dad now.”

Zarcilla then added the following statement, reaffirming his dedication to his furry new family:

Zarcilla said he hopes to take the mother cat to the clinic to check for a microchip just in case she has a family that is missing her. If none can be located, he appears to be more than willing to take her and her kittens in.

“I am so ready to be a dad right now,” he added.

“I think I’m living the best day of my life.” Zarcilla later remarked.

He updated a year later with the cutest pics
