Nicole Toney was driving across a bridge on her way home from work on her lunch break when she noticed something that nearly stopped her heart.

A little kitty was hanging on the edge of the bridge.

Toney had already drove past the cat by the time she understood what it was and that she obviously needed help, and she circled back around as quickly as she could, praying with everything she had that the kitty would still be there.

“I felt like puking,” Toney told The Dodo. “I was so worried that she wouldn’t be there when I turned around.”

When I say I was so scared I almost puked….

Toney pulled over as securely as she could on the busy highway and was relieved to see the cat still alive. She didn’t want to get too near to the kitten because she was concerned she might scare it. Toney was aware that the situation was dangerous and tried her best to proceed with care.

“I came up to her carefully because I was afraid of heights and I was afraid she was going to jump, and then I just wanted to be sure to get extremely near to her so I could put my arm behind her and attempt to catch her if she jumped over the bridge,” Toney explained.
“Then I grasped the nape of her neck and immobilized her, just like parent cats do when they carry their kittens by the scruff of their neck.”

The small kitten didn’t move a muscle during the entire rescue. She was visibly afraid, and while she was wary of a strange lady approaching her, she appeared to realize that Toney was there to help her.

“She didn’t hiss or claw; I suppose she was too terrified to move,” Toney explained. “She was basically like, ‘OK, cool, someone got me down!’”

Toney was overjoyed when she finally got the small cat into the car. She’d been anxious, but she’d saved her, and the cat appeared relieved as well. She merely sat in the car while the two went home together, relieved to no longer be situated on the edge of a bridge.

Toney contacted her husband on her way home and told him the story. Even though they already had five dogs and a cat, he encouraged her to bring the kitten home nonetheless, get her settled, and they’d work it out from there.

“He was like, ‘OK, well, we’ll speak about it after work,’ and then we never really spoke about it; we just kept her,” Toney explained.

The couple named the cat Ducky since she was such a lucky duck to have survived her experience. They used to have two cats, Nigel and Mabel, but Mabel went missing a few years ago. They believed that Ducky would become a new buddy for Nigel when he lost his sister.

“She reminds me a lot of [Mabel],” Toney added. “I was thinking, ‘Man, we have to keep her!’” I felt awful for Nigel because he didn’t have a sister anymore, and I immediately thought, ‘She can be his sister.’”

Ducky has been in her new home for a few months now, and she’s settled in nicely. She’s still a bit wary after everything she’s gone through, but she adores her new family, and her mother is grateful that she happened to drive by her that day.

“She’s quite lively, nice — I don’t believe she’s totally come out of her shell yet,” Toney explained.
