Squirrel has always been a self-sufficient cat that prefers to do her own thing. She adores her parents, of course, but she really cherishes her alone time and has become very adept at entertaining herself.

“Most of the time she is pleased to be left alone, and her favorite pastimes include chasing shadows (typically her own), sitting on paper, and smelling shoes,” Squirrel’s mother, Joy Twemlow, told The Dodo. “She is terrified of yoga mats and the dryer.”

Squirrel’s parents had been home all the time since the coronavirus outbreak began. While she doesn’t appear to mind and continues to do her own thing, her parents felt horrible that she didn’t have as much room to be alone and wanted to make amends.

Twemlow and her partner, James Bungard, recently celebrated their anniversary and decided to create a castle for Squirrel to celebrate and spend the day with.

The pair swiftly began construction on the castle one afternoon and worked on it until around 8 p.m. Squirrel, of course, oversaw the project and was fascinated as the castle began to take shape.

“She was fascinated the entire time we were building it,” Twemlow added. “At one point, we had to wait until she was finished sitting in a box before we could add it to the structure.”

The castle was completed, and it is now one of Squirrel’s “new” favorite things.

“We frequently come out into the living room to find her sitting in it,” Twemlow explained. “It’s really touching to watch her peering through one of the windows while curled up in it.”

Squirrel adores her new castle and is grateful to her parents for providing her with her own own personal home.

“I hope she forgives us now for staying at home all day,” Bungard posted on Facebook.
