Delivery Driver Leaves Car For 5 Minutes — And Comes Back To A Cat

Lauren Kasdan was out delivering meals one night in a quiet area, expecting another peaceful night. She stepped out of her car at 11 p.m., dropped the meal off on a customer’s doorstep, texted them that it had come, and then walked back to her car, which was parked nearby. She was only gone for maybe two or three minutes.
When she returned, there was a cat in the passenger seat waiting for her.
“For a split second, I believed I was hallucinating,” Kasdan told The Dodo. “It was difficult to process. There was … a cat. In my car.”
Kasdan’s front windows were slightly open, so the cat must have interpreted this as an invitation and jumped straight in. When Kasdan returned to her car, the cat, eventually called Athena, appeared unfazed. It was almost as though she’d been expecting her.
“She pretended like she belonged there,” Kasdan added. “She sniffed her way around the seat and my central console as if she belonged there.” When I returned, she was like, ‘Oh, hi! Is this your vehicle? It’s comfortable and toasty.’ She didn’t scream or flee. She actually crawled into my lap and began purring and kneading on my legs.”
Kasdan suspected Athena had been surviving on her own for a time because she was extremely skinny, filthy, and flea-infested. She had no clue where the adorable kitty had come from, but she knew she couldn’t leave her alone. Kasdan went directly to Walgreens, where he bought some cat food and litter before heading home.
Athena was the loveliest thing during the entire procedure. She understood she needed assistance and was thankful to Kasdan and her mother for providing it. Athena was nothing but agreeable, even when Kasdan had to give her a bath to clean her up. She’d rushed into that car in search of assistance, and now that she’d found it, nothing could bring her down.
“I started the water, carefully placed her in it, and she relaxed almost instantly,” Kasdan explained. “At first, she was meowing very loudly, but as I started cleaning her with the flea and tick shampoo, she calmed in and began purring… When I finally took her out, I covered her in a towel and she fell asleep in my arms.”
Kasdan looked for a microchip in Athena but couldn’t discover one. Given her health, it’s unlikely she has a family, but Kasdan posted on several lost and found pet pages just in case. Kasdan and her family have always loved dogs, but when her mother met Athena and realized how gentle she was, she knew she would keep her if no one claimed her.
Athena is fitting in nicely to her new home and simply wants to be pampered all the time. She jumped into Kasdan’s car that night, hoping for the best — and had no clue her life was about to change forever.
