Male Cat Was Found Caring For Abandoned Kittens As If He Were Their Mother

Rescuers from the Homeless Animal Adoption League (HAAL) in Bloomfield, New Jersey, were confronted with a circumstance that left them stunned yet happy to witness a male cat caring for abandoned kittens. Protecting the abandoned brood, the animal proved to be quite a mother.

A lady going home from work discovered a laundry basket full of kittens abandoned on the sidewalk, according to a HAAL post on their Facebook page. The Good Samaritan was at a loss for what to do, so he informed the shelter that they appeared to have been abandoned recently.

He explained that the mother was with the litter and that he didn’t feel safe picking them up. He had began to rain as the temperature dropped.

Joann LoGreco of HAAL told The Dodo:

“We got a call about kittens left in a laundry basket on the sidewalk on an East Orange street,” says the dispatcher. We don’t usually undertake street rescues, but the area was close to our shelter, and it was starting to rain, so we went to investigate.”

As a result, HAAL went in search of the kittens. The six kittens were all curled up together with their “mother” when they arrived to keep them warm and secure.

They fed them and checked on all of the kittens, and were relieved to see that they were all healthy.

The litter and its “mother” were transported to the shelter that night. But his rescuers were in for a shock the next day.

On their Facebook page, HAAL wrote:

“We had extra time the next day, so we went to meet the beautiful family.” We had a pleasant surprise while inspecting the mother. Mom was a terrible mother. She was male. Male was the loving cat that looked after the small pups. He may have been the father or elder brother of another litter, but she was her guardian and surrogate mother to those young kittens. He cleans them and plays with them individually.”

According to the film featuring the late Robin Williams, who disguised himself as a housewife to spend time with her children following her divorce, this gorgeous cat has been nicknamed ‘Mrs. Doubtfire.’
