The kitten and her littermates were rescued and taken to the Escambia County Animal Shelter in Pensacola, Florida, USA. The kids were given the required treatment, but they were to be relocated to the Providence Animal Center in Media, Pennsylvania, for a better life.
Amy Cool, a volunteer at the Escambia shelter, volunteered to take in the kitten litter while she waited for her transfer.
Everyone was quite lovely and friendly, but Candy Corn, the small cat, rapidly proved to be a love for her caregiver.
She got into confidence and climbed on Amy’s shoulders in a matter of minutes, and began following her everywhere in the house. It was very evident that there was nothing that made Candy happier than being close to her foster mom.
Amy said:
“She was very exceptional with me in how caring she was. I’m a person who wants to have kittens 24/7 and wants to give them tons of hugs, so we’re a perfect fit.”
When the kittens were brought to the Providence Animal Center, Amy felt very sad and felt that a part of her had been taken away.
Candy Corn and her siblings arrived at the shelter in early October, then were taken to the foster home of volunteer Linnea Hermanson. The kittens had to receive special care and believe a little more, before they were ready to be adopted.
Candy was the smallest, she was very behind in weight, and Linnea soon realized that she preferred the company of humans instead of food.
Linnea said:
“Most of the time she would completely ignore the food and follow me around or climb on my lap. She just wasn’t interested in food if she had the option of getting her caregiver’s attention.’
So, Linnea started to leave the room so that Candy could eat, but when she came back, she found her sitting in the door waiting.
Linea added:
“She was a love bug who wanted attention more than food, and she obviously loved my dogs and everyone else.”
Meanwhile, Amy missed Candy so much, and she couldn’t stop thinking about the loving little kitty who stole her heart.
Amy commented:
“I cried so much that my friends and family were the ones who started calling the Providence Animal Center and people they knew in Philly, to tell them that we had various plans to get her back.”
The woman has cared for about 20 cats and kittens, but she firmly believed that Candy Corn was destined to be part of her family.
As Amy contacted the rescue center, the little kitty continued to spread hugs and love to whoever was available in her house.
Linnea said:
“She would also interrupt my work video calls by climbing on my shoulder and biting my ears! It’s easy to see why the trip from FL to PA was an easy choice for Amy.”
At the end of October, Candy was finally grown enough for her spay surgery and was ready to prepare to find a home.
So Amy got in her car and drove three hours to New Orleans, then took a four-hour flight to her final destination, Philadelphia.
Amy commented:
“Once I held her, she started purring like crazy and stayed right next to me. When we finally got out of the airport, she insisted on sitting on my shoulder for the entire car ride.”
The loving kitten was holding on to her beloved human very tightly, letting her know that she would never let her go from her side.
When Candy arrived at her old home, she immediately recognized her mother’s room and all her toys; she was happy to be back.
Candy Corn spent her time purring and expressing all her happiness, she sat on Amy’s shoulder, and surrounded her with many hugs.
