Hubert’s family knew straight away when they got him from a local shelter three months ago that he was full of personality and sass.

“We often describe his demeanor as a cranky old guy who secretly loves and requires affection,” Hubert’s mother, Laci Reamer, told The Dodo.

The 8-year-old cat quickly relaxed into his new home — and made it clear from the start that he’s completely preoccupied with wanting to get outside.

Despite the fact that the shelter said he’d always been an indoor cat, Hubert has a tremendous interest with the vast outdoors, and even though he adores his new cozy life and his family, he still tries to escape and go play outside whenever he gets the chance.

“He attempts to flee on a regular basis,” Reamer stated. “On one occasion, he was successful in his escape. We had no idea till he began walking up the sidewalk! How could you have missed a 31-pound cat slipping past your legs at the door? Yes, you read that correctly! He weighs 31 pounds. He’s chubby yet energetic (he’s on a diet).”

It grew to the point where every time someone new arrived to the door, Hubert would try to persuade them that he was permitted to walk outside — to the point where his family had to put up a notice.

“We designed the sign because he will give everyone that look with those large eyes that says, ‘Please help me.’” There’s a lot for me to see and do out there. ‘If you just open that door, I’ll glide right by you,’ remarked Reamer. “Because he’s really skilled at begging, we wanted to make people aware of him.” We live on a busy street and don’t want him to get injured!”

So far, the sign has done wonders in keeping Hubert secure inside, and everyone who sees it has a great time laughing at it.

“We receive a lot of feedback on that,” Reamer remarked. “The UPS person even came on our door to tell us how much he appreciated it and how much it made him laugh.”

Hubert’s elaborate escape attempts are no longer effective as a result of the sign, but his family is working on a delightful surprise that will allow him to explore in a much more supervised manner to help with his passionate love of going outside.

“We just ordered him a collar and leash to get him started on his huge outside excursions,” Reamer explained. “I’m crossing my fingers that everything goes smoothly!”
