Liz Clark, a 38-year-old self-proclaimed “pirate,” decided to quit her job and sail across the world in 2006. In San Diego, California, she worked as a waiter (United States). Liz was given a Cal 40 sailboat on the condition that she record her incredible trips across the world.

“Captain Lizzy” rescued a 6-month-old cat in 2013, who became her second-in-command on her yacht. Amelia The Tropicat, the kitty, acclimated well to her existence on the sea.

Amelia was an adept at fishing from the boat’s stern, going for long walks on the beach, and trekking.

Liz is thankful for Amelia’s company when sailing across the world; she always believed the kitty added a bit of home to the boat. They traveled extensively around the western coasts of Mexico and Central America, as well as the South Pacific.

Liz has taken multiple cruises across the islands of French Polynesia and spent time visiting Kiribati’s eastern islands. Without a doubt, there are too many memories and great experiences.

Liz had had the concept of sailing across the world when she was nine years old and spent six months aboard her family’s yacht off the coast of Mexico.

Liz has been utterly attracted by the experience of nature and the chance of learning about a new culture, along with the freedom to sail in the wide sea, ever since.

Liz stated in an interview with Traveler a few years ago:

“On the way, I ran into Amelia. She lived in the forest for six months and was six months old. She became less fearful of the water and the locations we cruised after learning to trust me. When we’re together, she knows she’s protected.”

During her time on the water aboard her sailboat, Swell, she has had many wonderful adventures that have enhanced her life. Liz recalls the cat with nostalgia; she was quite frail, approximately six months old, and longing for food and attention. She was commanding and courageous.

Throughout her years of travel, Liz came across several abandoned cats and dogs and considered assisting them, but she says it didn’t seem fair to expose them to her itinerant lifestyle.

Liz talked about her life with Amelia and all the fantastic experiences they enjoyed on their travels in an interview with Patagonia.

Liz remembers:

“I’m not sure what happened to me that day; all I remember is that leaving without her was painful. I called her Amelia, after the famed Amelia Earhart, since I knew we both had a zest for adventure.”

Amelia was usually domineering and liked guiding everything on the yacht, while Liz, for her part, avoided her whenever possible. She had a cunning and resolute look about her, as if she were nimble and ready for any adventure.

Unfortunately, after all of these stories, journeys, and fantastic experiences with Liz, Amelia headed out on her own adventure, but she left behind the best memories and great anecdotes to be remembered.
