Grace Choi is a member of the Boomers Buddies Rescue board of directors in Los Angeles, California. She saw a video of a sorrowful cat with short legs who appears to have a congenital condition that limits its mobility. Joey, the cat, can be seen in the video trying to hide his face in a corner of the shelter’s kennel.
Grace was compelled to assist Joey after learning that he was a wild cat and could not possibly be an indoor cat, but the rescuer recognized that the lovely and terrified kitten needed a lot of attention.
Grace stated:
“We realized we had to assist him.” I went to the shelter the next day to pick him up. When I brought him home, he showed no signs of aggression. He just looked terrified. I sat with him for about 30 minutes to an hour to show him I was safe.”
Grace approached Joey carefully, caressing his head, and the cat was soothed by the affection. Despite his nervousness, he approached Grace in the hopes of gaining some affection.
Joey rolled on his side to caress his tummy and started making gorgeous purrs; I was overjoyed.
Joey was born with a congenital abnormality that caused his two front legs to be underdeveloped. He can’t walk with them, yet it doesn’t stop him from moving. The cat leaps to his feet and staggers like a little kangaroo.
Grace explains:
“Since then, it has been the largest creature in the hugs. All he wants is to be petted all day. Joey, I believe, immediately understood he was in a secure environment and opened up to all the affection.”
Life had not been easy for the cat; when he came at the shelter, he had significant health issues that required quick treatment. Joey had to overcome various setbacks, but he had Grace’s full support to do so.
She remembers:
“Joey’s scabies were entirely cured after roughly three weeks. He was also inexperienced with the sandbox, so training took a few weeks. It took some time to get him adjusted to being in a familiar atmosphere.”
Grace wanted to give the kitten the best life possible and assist him in becoming an indoor cat. It wasn’t always so straightforward; Joey didn’t have much personality, didn’t move much, and just wanted to be pampered all day.
Joey’s personality soon emerged, and the first time he spotted a cat scraper, he strolled up and joyfully used it, giving his front paw a well-deserved manicure.
They understood right away that the cat was ready to interact with the other animals in the house. Grace introduced him to her resident cat Kitty Boy, and although it took him a while to accept it, he wanted to teach Joey how to be a cat as soon as he was ready. He’d climb the tree and encourage Joey to do it.
Grace was startled to find how agile Joey could be at the time.
The feline’s mother added:
“It turns out to be one of the most lavish cats I’ve ever encountered! Joey never fails to make me chuckle. It’s a lot of fun.”
This kitten realized that he can perform big jumps pushed by his rear legs thanks to Kitty Boy’s companionship and encouragement, and he has delightfully surprised his new family. Everyone is overjoyed with their accomplishments.
Grace states:
“Joey is the most loving cat I’ve ever encountered. Every day, he shows me how appreciative he is. As soon as you approach him, he begins purring and is eager to soak up all the attention he can receive.”
Grace feels Joey is ready to begin a new chapter in her life, and she hopes to find him a good home where he will be cherished and cared for indefinitely.
Grace continues:
“Joey is a particular cat that demands a lot of care in order for him to feel safe and comfortable. With my three current pets, a cat like Joey demands a lot more attention than I can provide.”
Grace ensures that Joey receives all of the care and attention he requires as she searches for his perfect house. It’s been a fantastic journey to get to where you are now, and you’ve grabbed a lot of hearts along the way.
Grace states:
“He is quite resilient, and I am overjoyed that he will find his permanent home, where he will be lavished with all the care and affection he deserves for the rest of his life!”
