Man Reunites With 19-Year-Old Cat He Thought He’d Lost Forever

A guy called Robert received a shocking phone call: his beloved cat, Chebon, was alive.
Seven years had gone since Robert had last seen Chebon, who had vanished soon before they were about to relocate from California to Ohio. Robert, who requested that his last name not be used, delayed his relocation to stay and hunt for his beloved pet, but after a year of no luck and no leads, he had to go on.
“I remember praying one time and saying, ‘God, I’ll do anything, just get my Chebon back,’” Robert said in a video shared on Ventura County Animal Services’ Facebook page.
Then the unthinkable occurred. A kind individual found a sickly-looking cat on the side of the road and took him to a nearby veterinarian. The cat was remarkably healthy, despite being a little dehydrated and dirty from life on the streets. When they scanned him for a microchip, they found Robert’s name. They also found out that the cat was 19 years old.
“I was scared there was some type of error,” Robert explained.
Robert immediately booked a trip to Los Angeles and drove up to the Camarillo Animal Shelter. He was led into a private room, and his gaze softened as they opened a cardboard box.
It seemed as if no time had gone when Robert and Chebon met each other for the first time in seven years. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
“Everyone in the room was sobbing, even another animal control officer,” Randy Friedman, marketing manager for Ventura County Animal Services, told The Dodo. “It was incredible from start to finish — and it was all because to a microchip.”
You can see the touching reunion here:
Chebon crawled out of the box and wrapped his paws over his father’s shoulder, as though he finally felt safe.
“At one point, [Chebon] hugged him, and Robert just burst into tears,” Friedman added. “You don’t see that in cats very often… It was quite moving.”
Chebon may now live his golden years in peace now that he has returned home. And the two will never let go of one other again.
