A inquisitive cat got into the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Saturday night and drew the attention of thousands of football fans.

During the first quarter of a game between the University of Miami Hurricanes and the Appalachian State Mountaineers, a stray cat came onto the top deck of the stands. The terrified cat jumped over the railing and dangled 50 feet above the ground.

The cat grasped at some cloth, but those below realized he couldn’t keep it up for long. Fans screamed in fear as the cat’s grasp began to slip.

“They were attempting to grab it from above and couldn’t reach it, but they were frightening it downward,” Craig Cromer, a University of Miami facilities manager, told NBC Miami. “It hung there for a short while with its two front paws, then one paw, and I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, it’s coming soon.’”

Cromer and his wife have season tickets and carry an American flag to every game. The quick-thinking pair unhooked the flag from the railing where it was hung and held it up just before the cat fell.

As the cat bounced into the flag, they made the finest catch of the game. As the audience roared in return, nearby fans held up the unhurt cat for all to see.

The cat was lifted up and transported to safety by stadium security personnel. The stadium announced on Twitter that they had donated a gift in the cat’s name to the Humane Society of Greater Miami and invited others to do the same.
