A’Lana Bates and her father asked her mother what she wanted for Mother’s Day in January 2020. Her response? A cat with orange and white markings.
“In the early nineties, we had a stray turn up who was an orange and white female we named Carmel, and she was the finest cat,” Bates told The Dodo. “We got an orange and white barn cat named Spooky a few years after she died, and he was a delight.” Mom has been wishing for another since he died in 2008.”
Of course, everyone thought the request was adorable, and they decided to adopt a kitten for her in May. Tom, on the other hand, came up.
A stray orange and white cat strolled into the family’s yard in the middle of a downpour only a few weeks after Bates’ mother made her request public. They couldn’t believe the cat they’d been hunting for had emerged out of nowhere, but he wasn’t what they’d imagined at first.
“At first, he was a bit tough, and all he wanted was for us to bring him food and drink on the deck,” Bates recalled. “Slowly, he began to enter the home, but we were unable to touch him.”
Even though it took months to earn Tom’s trust, he continued coming back. It was evident that he wanted to be a part of the family and that he felt at home there. It was all a little strange to him. His new family, on the other hand, was quite patient with him. Even while he still has his eccentricities, he appears to have embraced his status as a family member.
Tom enjoys being pet, but if you pet him for more than a second longer than he desires, he will bite you. Only Bates’ mother has permission to pick him up. His moniker comes from the fact that he is more her cat than anybody else’s. Teresa’s Orange is represented by Tom.
Regardless of everything, Tom’s family adores him and wouldn’t have him any other way.
“Tom wants to be a lover but doesn’t know how,” stated Bates. “I’m very sure my parents knew they were going to keep him the instant he arrived up.”
