Some may label Achilles as a copycat, but the 2-year-old tabby understands there’s no greater instructor than his mother, Stephanie Isidro.

Achilles never leaves his beloved person alone and has picked up a few human quirks along the way. “He’s really gifted at monitoring what I do and catching up on my daily habits and routines,” Isidro told The Dodo.

Achilles’ passion of cleaning his teeth is one of his most peculiar behaviors. Achilles has been waking up at 5 a.m. every day since he was a kitten and following his mother into the bathroom while she washed her teeth. “He simply sits there staring at me,” Isidro said.

When Isidro bought additional toothbrushes for his mother’s visiting sisters, he became more involved in her morning ritual. Achilles knew just what to do when she placed the toothbrushes on the holder near the sink. It seemed as though he had been waiting that moment his entire life.

“I was brushing my teeth as usual in the morning when I spotted Achilles suddenly mirroring me with my sister’s toothbrush,” Isidro explained. “At first, I thought to myself, ‘Gross!’ But then, as he began doing this often, [I realized] it was genius.”

While most animals despise having their teeth cleaned, Achilles looks forward to sharing this daily ritual with his mother. “I even began keeping an extra toothbrush out particularly for him,” Isidro said.

“I’ve had a lot of pets in my life, and I’ve never seen anything like that,” Isidro said. “If I let him use the bathroom at night, he washes his teeth before going to bed.” He maintains good dental hygiene.”

Achilles thinks he’s human, and his imitative behavior doesn’t end with the toothbrush.

“He acts like a little version of myself,” Isidro observed. “He will sleep if I sleep and snooze if I nap.” He even sleeps like me, with his belly up and tucking himself under the blankets.”

Imitation, according to Isidro, is the highest form of flattery.
