Most of the time, becoming stuck at the bottom of a deep, dark hole in the ground would not be considered a lucky break. But for Harvey, a particularly mischievous kitten, it may be one of the best things that has ever happened to him.

Rescuers from Dallas Animal Services in Texas were alerted to the orange tabby’s underground situation when someone noticed him at the bottom of a 25-foot hole on a construction site.

After a six-hour ordeal, the rescuers were able to pull Harvey to safety. He was mud-caked but otherwise in shockingly decent form.

Nobody knows how the cat got caught in the hole, but a far more puzzling question would eventually emerge.

Harvey was given a thorough washing when he returned to the shelter. The rescuers then searched him for an identification microchip and, thankfully, discovered one.

But, much to their amazement, it said that the cat was from Denver, Colorado – approximately 800 miles away!

“Everyone was really shocked!” a spokesman for the shelter told The Dodo. “I know the individual who initially phoned his owner made a point of describing the cat to the owner to clarify because it seemed so odd.”

Harvey, it seems, couldn’t believe how far he’d come as well.

Harvey had vanished from their Denver home eight months before, according to the owner. It’s unclear how he wound himself in Dallas, which is halfway across the nation.

Needless to say, however, he was very, VERY lost.

Harvey might not have been found if he hadn’t fallen into the hole. What was most important was that his owner had the foresight to get him microchipped in case he ever went missing.

“It’s a fantastic microchip success story.” “Without it, there’s absolutely no way we could have found his family,” the shelter stated. “We are always delighted to witness such joyful tales made possible by a chip!”

Harvey’s owner is set to fly to Dallas on Sunday to retrieve her long-lost kitten, a happy ending that his rescuers never expected when they stepped in to assist him climb out of the hole:

“We had spent so much on saving Harvey, and we’re overjoyed that we could have such an incredible reunion.”
