Fred’s family relocated to Canada when he was 13 years old, and they decided Fred would not accompany them. Instead of seeking a new home for their cat, the family took an ugly option.

“This family sent him to the clinic to be put down instead of finding a solution for him,” Piper Wood, founder of Hand in Paw, a Los Angeles-based animal rescue nonprofit, told The Dodo. “Of course, the kind personnel at the animal hospital phoned and pleaded for my assistance since they felt so horrible about Fred.”

“I simply saw his face and my heart melted, and I thought to myself, ‘Can I keep him?’” Shaw revealed to The Dodo. “And Piper said, ‘Yeah.’ I suppose she already knew I’d be a sucker for this cat.”

Shaw was head over heels in love with Fred — and his eccentric attitude.

“When he eats and drinks, he makes the sweetest noises,” Shaw added. “He prefers to sleep by leaning his cheek on a part of your body.” And he does this thing where he paws you if he needs anything, or if I’m snuggling him too much, he’ll press his paw up against me, as if to say, ‘Enough now.’”

Shaw decided to celebrate Fred’s 1-year adoptaversary as if it were his birthday. She didn’t know when he was born, but she guessed he was at least 14 years old.

“I believe it is important to celebrate animals,” Shaw remarked. “They’re just like humans, and they deserve to be validated.”

She hung up decorations, scattered catnip confetti, and gave Fred a cake.

The cake wasn’t just for show; as Shaw had already found, Fred had a sweet tooth.

“I don’t sit here and give my cat pieces,” Shaw explained, “but he does appreciate the icing.” “I just ever give him a small bit.”

Fred enjoyed the celebration, according to Shaw, and he didn’t seem to mind getting dressed up in a bowtie and crown…

… though he’s not always convinced by Shaw’s wardrobe selections for him.

“He puts up with it,” Shaw added. “He’ll sit with me for at least 20 minutes and let me know when he’s had enough.”

Aside from the costumes, Fred seemed to enjoy Shaw, as seen by his cuddling in her lap. Shaw couldn’t see her life without him.

“This cat expanded my heart so tremendously,” Shaw remarked. “You never know what they’re going to do or how they’re going to affect your life.”
