For thousands of years, cats have effectively run the city of Istanbul, Turkey – they wander freely and are adored and cared for by the locals.
However, when one of them, Anka, was hit by a car and suffered a spinal injury, rescuers in Istanbul worked tirelessly to find a method to save him.
They first tried to have him surgery to correct his paralysis so he could return to his normal life, but it didn’t work.
“His rescuers lovingly provided for Anka’s operation, but it was in vain; the lovely, green-eyed cat was paralyzed,” Angela Hartley, development director of Tabby’s Place, a cat sanctuary in New Jersey, said in a statement to The Dodo. “Anka, who was young, healthy, and full of love, should have been just beginning a long and happy life. His journey seemed to be coming to an end all too soon.”
His rescuers in Turkey, on the other hand, refused to quit up.
They arranged for Anka to be flown to the United States to be examined by a veterinary neurologist. Anka travelled across the seas with her pet passport in tow to get the consultation. Anka, however, was permanently disabled, according to the veterinary neurologist.
Anka’s spirit remained unshaken despite all of this. He demonstrated at Tabby’s Place that he still enjoyed interacting with people, just as he did on the streets of Istanbul.
Even though his back legs didn’t work, he still enjoyed playing with toys.
“As a permanent paraplegic, Anka required a refuge that could meet all of his medical demands while also providing him with a lifetime of love,” Hartley explained. “As a result, Anka’s angels approached Tabby’s Place.”
The staff at Tabby’s Place is used to caring for cats that have special needs. And everyone fell in love with Anka the moment he arrived at the New Jersey refuge.
“The Tabby’s Place staff is over over heels in love with Anka,” Hartley stated. The shelter provides its pets a chance to find homes, knowing how difficult it may be to find a family that can care for special needs cats.
Anka can’t use the litter box because of his immobility, therefore he requires someone to help him go to the potty multiple times every day. “Anka is such a special kitty that Tabby’s Place feels he may be adopted,” Hartley added. “However, it will take an equally amazing family to meet his requirements.”
Anka will have a lifelong home at Tabby’s Place, where rescuers love Anka’s refreshing attitude, even if he doesn’t find a home.
“Anka has no idea that there is anything ‘wrong’ or ‘different’ about him,” Hartley added. “Of course, it would take a very special individual or family to adopt this sweet kid, but we believe they are out there.”
