A stray cat in Salt Lake City, Utah, needed assistance, so she decided to beg for it.

Susannah Nevison, a PhD student at the University of Utah who supervises a pedagogy class at a local middle school on Thursdays, and one of her students were strolling across the parking lot last week when they observed a hanger-on.

“A lovely little cat began following us,” Nevison told The Dodo. “When I got to my car, I opened the door and climbed in.”

The cat wasn’t about to let Nevison off that easy.

“The small cat leapt straight up in my lap while I was placing my handbag in the passenger seat!” According to Nevison. “I was a little taken aback – she simply stayed in my lap purring and nuzzling, and ultimately got up on my shoulder.”

However, there is a little unfavorable twist. Nevison, a dog lover and owner for many years, is allergic to cats. She also saw that the stray’s eye seemed to hurt her, so the small cat would undoubtedly want assistance in dealing with that. And, certainly, the cat appeared to be pleading for assistance just by getting inside the car.

“Because the cat didn’t have a collar and was plainly looking for a ride, I drove her to a local shelter,” Nevison explained.

Staff at Salt Lake County Animal Services (SLCAS) looked for a microchip but found none. The 1-year-old cat had been fending for herself on the streets, but her sweetness appeared unaffected.

“She’s really nice and has a very gentle purr,” SLCAS marketing and communications manager Callista Pearson told The Dodo. “It appears that the eye/socket did not form correctly, which is why we will remove it; otherwise, it might become infected and be very unpleasant for her.”

If no one claims the adorable little cat, she will be available for adoption on, once she has been neutered and has surgery for her eye. Until then, she seems happy to explore the shelter and snuggle with the staff.

Despite her best efforts, Nevison was unable to bring the cat home — but she is determined to assist in finding her a new home. “She is a lovely tabby with a marble-colored coat,” Nevison remarked.
