Shy Cat Never Hugged His Mom — Until He Realized She Was Pregnant

Lisa Kitchen and her husband adopted their cat, Max, when he was a kitten after returning from their honeymoon. Kitchen’s 19-year-old cat had recently passed away, and she urgently wanted another one — but Max made it apparent from the start that he favoured Kitchen’s husband over her.
“When we originally got Max, he was immediately connected to my husband,” Kitchen told The Dodo. “He’d snuggle up on his chest and sleep.” He’d meow for him to come pick him up. “Not that much for me.”
Max has always been a really playful and cuddly cat, but never with Kitchen. He never caressed her, never played with her, and never showed her much attention at all – until one day, everything changed.
Kitchen returned home from work to find Max meowing at her, as though he needed her attention. He continued to meow at her at random for several days, and Kitchen decided to try giving him some affection in return, which he gladly embraced. It was odd, but Kitchen didn’t think much of it until Max cuddled with her while she slept.
Kitchen explained, “I started waking up with him laying on my legs.” “The next night, he’d cuddle between my legs, which was unusual because he’d never been so near before.” He’s finally sleeping on my stomach now. He attempts to balance himself on my back if I sleep on my stomach.”
Kitchen realized something was wrong at this moment. There had to be a reason for Max’s increased interest in her — and that’s when she took a pregnancy test.
Max sensed his mother was pregnant before she ever knew it, and he became her little guardian, trying to keep her safe and loved as she carried his new sibling.
Max is still quite close to his mother and seeks to be at her side at all times. He regularly cuddles with her, and Kitchen is trying to drink up every second of it before the baby arrives in June.
“He massages my legs now, and he yells for me if he doesn’t know where I went,” Kitchen explained. “I have to say, ‘Mommy’s downstairs, Max,’ and he chirps and dashes down the stairs for me.” Since then, he’s been Velcro. He no longer bothers my spouse, so I have to make a spot for him on the bed alongside me at night.”
Kitchen is aware that Max might revert to his distant demeanor at any time — or that he is simply waiting until the baby is born, at which point he will devote all of his love and attention to his new baby sibling.
