As he settled back lately to watch the world go by, this corpulent grayish-orange feline certainly had no intention of brightening anyone’s spirits, staring out grumpily from his sourpuss eyes. But he’s the one who’s in on the joke!

He did exactly that.

Brooke Goldman wasn’t where she intended to be early  Sunday on a chilly autumn sidewalk in New York City. Her partner had a train to catch that morning, and Goldman made the mistake of agreeing to walk with him. She really wanted to be in bed. Nonetheless, she went ahead with it.

“I was kind of out of it,” Goldman said to The Dodo. “I was rushing home to get back to sleep since I wasn’t prepared for the day at all.”

But everything changed with one lazy step. Goldman’s gaze was drawn to this, as if by some holy vision:

A random fat kitty sat curled in the manger of a little nativity display a short distance away.

Though he clearly had no qualms about taking over the seat or being concerned about offending the intended occupant, the dissatisfied cat did appear to enjoy the calm deference offered to him by the display’s figurines.

Goldman had a slightly different reaction.

“I was laughing my a$$ off,” she said.

And just like that, the unknowing kitten had brightened Goldman’s day.

“I guess you could say he made me happy as I was walking home. It was really mood-lifting “She stated. “Having so much fun that early in the morning makes the rest of the day a lot more enjoyable.”

Fortunately for the rest of us, Goldman was nice enough to share holiday happiness by photographing the cuddly Scrooge. After all, it’s the season for pleasure, mirth, and amusement, even if it comes from a cranky cat.

“A nice animal photograph can heal everything,” Goldman claims.
