Posted by u/rickjamesbich 20 hours ago I trapped two very pregnant cats in my apartments last week. They had their litters within about 6 hours of each other. Every time I check on them they're co- mothering each others kittens. Is this normal among mom cats that just had litters, or an indicator that they knew each other outside?

Hey, all moms need help with their babies sometimes, and there should not be any shame about it. It’s a good thing that hey have one another, really, because there is only so much we can do to to help them with their itty bitty babies. It’s good to have an extra babysitter on hand sometimes.

Especially when that babysitter is oh so cute. Okay. Fine. We’re in love with this strange little family. They look both completely exhausted and so, so happy to have one another, and we are happy for them and hope that they will get to be together for a long, long time.

darcerin 18 hr. ago thumpity thumpity thump BANG was standard in my house after a neighbor's cat (which we informally adopted) gave birth to five kittens. Once the herd learned to run, it was like buffalo herds on the move. 2.3k Reply Share

. afito 19 hr. ago cats build social groups about as big as their resources allow - if that means being alone then so be it, if that means having 20 cats in a pack then that's also good 5.3k Reply Share

HazelCheese · 17 hr. ago I was driving home at night once and on the street just before mine, as I turned the corner, there was like 10 cats all just sat in a big circle looking at each other. It was like some kind of council meeting. 3.3k Reply Share

fosterhamster · 19 hr. ago It's normal and happens in colonies in the wild. A mother cat will also sometimes adopt needy kittens who have lost or been rejected by their mom. 10.0k Reply Share

Bebinn 19 hr. ago Normal for them to coparent. Makes sense, one can leave the babies to hunt while the other takes care of them. Even tho they no longer need to hunt they still feel the same way. 8.6k Reply Share

SunnyAlwaysDaze 18 hr. ago A lot of times the moms that co- parent together can turn into a bonded pair. If you adopt the moms out, might try to get them adopted out together. 1.9k Reply Share

Impressive_Ad_6053 · 19 hr. ago Also if these two were in the same vicinity they probably did know each other. If they were not as familiar with you before you brought them in it's possible they are huddled to protect one another and their kittens. We're they strays? 458 Reply Share

Colfrmb 19 hr. ago I knew a couple of barn cat mamas who did this. When I first saw them switching around their babies, I thought oh no somebody's gonna kill somebody and it won't be pretty. But everybody turned out OK. Sometimes one of the mamas would go off hunting and all the babies would be on top of the remaining mother. 463 Reply Share

    • RegulatoryCaptured Me 18 hr. ago If you gently pick up and stroke the back of each kitten for even one minute per kitten per day, they will all be friendlier with humans, and gentler, than if ignored. 412 Reply Share
