Names hold significant meaning for individuals, shaping their identity and evoking emotions. Such is the case for Reddit user Altruistic-Humor-823, a proud dog parent to Zahava, a lively pooch whose name means “Gold / Gilded” in Hebrew.
Meanwhile, OP’s sister-in-law eagerly awaited the arrival of her baby girl. To honor her grandmother, she decided to name her daughter with a name starting with “Z” – Zahava, just like the dog.
However, tension arose when the sister-in-law requested a name change for the dog. OP, unwilling to compromise, cited the six years of training and emotional attachment to the name. The sister-in-law disagreed, arguing that a dog wouldn’t notice the change.
Now, family harmony hangs in the balance as both parties stand firm on their positions.

1. Let’s find out.
2. OP has a dog named Zahava which means gold in Hebrew.
3. The issue is that OP’s SIL is about to have a baby and she wants to give it the same name as OP’s dog but feels uncomfortable doing so while the dog still has that name.
4. SIL and her husband asked OP if they would change their dog’s name so they could take the name Zahava for their daughter.
5. OP said no because the dog had an association with that namr for over 6 years. SIL freaked out saying the dog wouldn’t even notice.
6. OP told her she could pick any other name that starts with Z but their dog would keep the name Zahava.

Here’s what the AITA community had to say about this:
7. Start texting her female Z names and keep your dog’s name the same.

I think SIL is being ridiculous by saying the dog won’t even notice the name change. If there is any who would get impacted by a name change, it is a pet animal, especially when their name is their recall. They are trained to respond to that particular name. H*ll, Zahava has been doing it for 6 years.
If SIL feels uncomfortable using a dog’s name, she can pick another one. As simple as that. NTA.
11. They put in a lot of effort to build significance around that name.
