Brittney and Brad are the human parents of an adorable black kitty with feline dwarfism.
But this story begins in the parking lot of a local gas station, where Brad, accompanied by his children, stumbled upon a tiny surprise that would soon become a beloved member of their family.
He spotted a small, desperate kitten scrambling for safety, and instinctively, he pointed her out to his children.
“Oh my gosh, look at that little kitten!”
The children immediately tried to catch the kitten who gave good chase. However, she soon found herself trapped by her head in a grate.
Brad’s youngest child carefully managed to free the cold, wet kitten, and could see that she was visibly shaken.
“She was wet and dirty, and she hissed us and we had to wrap her in a towel,” shared Brad with We Love Cats and Kittens.
“So we took her home and we nursed her back to the health.”
He humorously decided on the name Toothless, after the dragon in his children’s favorite movie, “How to Train Your Dragon.”
“She had a lot of the same mannerisms as well as that attitude,” said Brad.
“So it was a perfect name for her,” he added.
So this name soon became even more fitting for the little black kitten, not only because of her resemblance to the dragon, but also because she had dental issues which later required the removal of many of her teeth.
“She only has her front teeth now, the little itty bitty ones between the fangs and the fangs, and that’s it,” said Brad.
“So ironically it ended up being true with her name.”
In Brad’s care, Toothless joined a household already populated by two older cats, Toby and Lily.
Toby, in particular, assumed a nurturing role, often snuggling with the tiny kitten, helping her adjust to her new surroundings.
As Toothless grew, Brittney and Brad noticed something unique about her.
“We assumed she was a dwarf,” Brittney reflected, noting the kitten’s disproportionately small jaw, large ears, and short legs.
Concerned for her well-being, they consulted a vet specializing in felines, who diagnosed Toothless with Chondrodysplasia – a genetic condition that, thankfully, did not hinder her from leading a happy life.
“Dwarf cats can have a lot of joint issues and heart problems, but luckily five years in, she’s still healthy,” explains Brittney.
Although this condition did require some adjustments.
These included regular ear cleanings to prevent infections and the use of laxatives, cleverly hidden in her favorite treat, tuna.
When living with Brad, Toothless found joy lounging on her beloved quilt that covered Brad’s couch.
When Brad and Brittney moved in together, this quilt later became her personal cave, a comforting refuge shaped into a cozy corner on the couch where she could retreat whenever she desired.
“She loves it so much,” shared Brad. “It’s her safe zone.”
Their new home was filled with little adaptations for Toothless.
“We put tiny little stairs all over the house just so she doesn’t have to jump and stress her joints too much,” explained her doting parents.
“We even had one set custom made to reach up to the window sill to go out into her catio,” they added.
From custom-made stairs to assist her in climbing to the window sill, to the catio that allowed her to bask in the sun and chase bugs, everything was designed with her comfort in mind.
The couple even adjusted their home’s temperature to suit her needs, emphasizing her status as the queen of their hearts.
“She’s definitely the queen of our house,” says Brittney.
This devoted cat-loving couple are deeply aware of the joy Toothless brought into their lives.
“We feel so lucky to have found her and have her in our life.”
