Senior dogs require just as much affection as puppies.

As the number of senior dogs in shelters grows, the need for loving homes for these elderly animals becomes more pressing than ever. Adopting a senior dog can be extremely rewarding because they often have a lot of love and companionship to give. By welcoming a senior dog into your heart and home, you not only give them a second chance at happiness but also make room for other animals in need.

Senior dogs have so much love and loyalty to offer, but many people avoid getting an older dog because they prefer a puppy. And, while I’m not saying you can’t have a puppy, a glance towards the back of the shelter wouldn’t hurt. Furthermore, if you need more reasons to adopt an older dog, we have a heartwarming story about a senior dog named Cheddar. Cheddar was a foster dog, and the humans who adopted him were hesitant to fall in love with him because he wouldn’t live as long as a senior doggo. Their worries were unfounded, as they adopted him anyway. He was eight years old when he was adopted, but he still had the energy of a puppy.

This is Cheddar. An adorable senior dog, loved by many.

He loves everyone, but his favourite person is the neighbour.

And that neighbour is called Jean.

He just loves her and I can’t explain why. I really don’t know. We started going to see her just about every single day. How he took to her, I mean, it was instantaneous. She babysits when we need a babysitter. When we leave her house, he just wants to stay there. – Vassall

He loves going over to Jean’s house.

When we met Cheddar that kind of all went out the window. Even my husband’s like, I know he’s about to turn 8, but it doesn’t matter. It was about Cheddar; it wasn’t about his age. He’s a big dog. Cheddar’s just beautiful. He has a beautiful personality. – Vassall

Who wouldn’t love such an adorable dog?

We sit outside and he just wants to sit next to her and he just wants all the attention from her. He just wants her to pet him. – Vassal

Jean has helped Cheddar become more confident.

She’s helped him so much. I think it’s given him more confidence. He can be very timid and sort of afraid of his own shadow. But he’s quite bold when he goes over there. – Vassal

You can see how much Cheddar loves Jean in this picture.

There are sounds that come out of him that we have never heard him make before. It almost sounds like he’s in pain; he’s so happy. – Vassall

Just look at the fluffy boy!

The funny thing is that Cheddar developed a close bond with the neighbours, and his favourite person became Jean. He apparently always wanted to meet Jean, and he would carry his own leash in his mouth. And, while he was always a little scared of other people, that all went out the window when it came to his aunt Jean.

He adored her and was willing to do anything to make her happy. Cheddar was a popular figure on social media when he was alive, and he remains so today. He is missed by millions of people who followed him but are now watching his younger brother grow up in front of their eyes. We can only hope Cheddar is having fun wherever he is.

Here he is, ready to go to Jean’s once more.

It’s just about her [Jean]. He just wants to be with her. She’s his favourite and has now become our friend. All dogs are special, and Cheddar is just that. If he were a human being, he would be just really kind. He’s the most gentle soul. It’s just a joy to be around him. – Vassall

And, of course, he always has a leash in his mouth.
