Cinder Block was abandoned by her family more than a year ago. Fortunately, a neighbor took her in and did their best to care for her — but Cinder Block was overfed and quickly weighed 25 pounds, which was far too hefty for a cat her size.
Concerned about Cinder’s quality of life, a neighbor brought her to Northshore Veterinary Hospital in Washington earlier this month to be put down — but the staff noticed how much life she still had in her and chose to take her in themselves.
The staff felt they’d made the correct decision when Cinder relaxed into her new temporary home at the hospital. The fat cat was lovely and sociable from the start, and she joyfully returned all of the affection she was receiving.
“She is such a beautiful, sweet-natured kitty — [she] purrs the minute you start chatting to her,” Northshore Veterinary Hospital veterinarian Brita Kiffney told The Dodo. “She enjoys ‘playing’ with feather toys, despite the fact that she doesn’t move much!”
Cinder has arthritis and is in a lot of discomfort, which is worsened by her weight. So, as soon as she arrived at the hospital, the nurses began devising a strategy to assist her recover.
She is presently 22 pounds and on a prescription diet. Her new caregivers, however, were aware that she would need to begin exercising as well. They believed the underwater treadmill would be ideal for her because she has problems moving.
They understood it would take some getting used to, but nothing could have prepared them for Cinder’s charming, hysterical reaction.
Cinder was both confused and irritated when she was initially placed on the underwater treadmill. The overweight cat had no desire to exercise, so she jammed her massive body into the corner and just put one paw on the treadmill, doing as little labor as she could.
Cinder objected to even that small bit of exercise and meowed the entire time, but her hospital pals simply kept praising her and telling her what a terrific job she was doing. Even small steps in the correct direction are better than no steps at all.
“She doesn’t like the treadmill, but she’s a loving cat, and she’s slowly getting used to it,” Kiffney explained.
Cinder is becoming more adept at utilizing the underwater treadmill as time passes. The video of her performing the bare minimum has now gone viral, and now people all around the world are rallying behind her and cheering her on.
Cinder will remain in the hospital as she works to regain her health, and after she has reduced enough weight, she’ll be living with one of the hospital’s receptionists. Everyone at Northshore Veterinary Hospital has become like family to Cinder over the past several weeks, and they’re all so thrilled that they were able to save her life and help inspire people across the world to never give up.
