Clare, a dedicated foster volunteer for Saving Stevie, a cat rescue organization, has long been passionate about helping community cats in her area.
Her journey with one particular kitty began a few years ago when a new, cautious face appeared on her front steps.
This newcomer was an orange-and-white cat who seemed to be in desperate need of food. Though clearly wary of people, his hunger repeatedly drove him back to Clare’s home.
Every time Clare tried to get closer, he would swiftly retreat, maintaining a safe distance.
Undeterred by his skittishness, she diligently worked to gain his trust.
“Though he appreciated the food I left out, he always kept his distance. I knew he needed time to build trust, so I let him set the pace,” shared Clare with We Love Cats and Kittens.
She named the cat Phoebe, believing him to be a girl, a name that stayed with him despite the gender mix-up.
Gradually, Phoebe started to feel more at ease around Clare. His growing confidence was evident as the gap between them slowly decreased.
“I could tell he was interested in me but too scared to let me pet him,” Clare recalled.
Clare’s patience began to pay off. She continued to feed Phoebe, and eventually, he allowed her to pet him, albeit cautiously and mostly while he was distracted by eating.
One memorable day, Clare heard a persistent meowing at her door. She saw Phoebe peeking through the windows, eagerly announcing his arrival.
This behavior soon escalated to Phoebe climbing up the window screens, all in an effort to capture Clare’s attention.
After two years of building trust, Phoebe finally took the bold step of becoming an indoor cat, inspired by his growing fondness for Clare’s resident cat, Archer.
With the backing of Saving Stevie, Clare prepared a quiet and comfortable room for Phoebe to acclimate to his new indoor life.
Upon exploring his new surroundings and marking his territory, Phoebe approached Clare, purr-meowing loudly, demanding her attention and affection.
In less than two weeks, Phoebe underwent a remarkable transformation. From a wary street cat, he blossomed into an affectionate and loving companion.
“After two years of keeping his distance, Phoebe only needed two weeks to become a cuddle bug!”
“He is the sweetest, cuddliest cat I have ever had. He is the definition of a Velcro kitty. I work from home, and he’d sit in my lap, stare at my face, or give me head butts all day if he could,” said Clare.
Phoebe’s days became filled with cuddles and playful antics. He loved to lay on Clare’s chest, soaking up every bit of affection she offered.
Occasionally, his playful side would surface, and he would chase a ball around or toss a toy with gleeful abandon.
Phoebe’s decision to leave the street life behind was a leap of faith that paid off immensely.
He reveled in the constant attention from his foster family and reciprocated their love tenfold.
He quickly became an indispensable part of Clare’s daily routine, often sitting in her lap as she worked, supervising her tasks, and providing unwavering companionship.
Phoebe’s affectionate nature extended to other friendly cats as well, but it was human affection he craved the most.
He would often drape himself over Clare’s chest or wrap his paws around her, making up for all those years he spent outside without the warmth of human touch.
After many months in foster care, Phoebe’s dream finally came true.
He found his perfect forever home where he could live like a king. Within hours of settling into his new environment,
Phoebe approached his new mom for pets and began following her around, their bond quickly growing stronger.
“He snuggled and flopped right on her chest when she got in bed for the night,” Clare recalled.
“This has been by far the hardest and happiest goodbye of my time fostering,” Clare reflected.
“But it eased my heart to see how much he loved his new mom. I’m so glad he felt right at home in his new house,” she added.
Phoebe’s journey from a skittish stray to a beloved indoor cat shows us the transformative power of patience, love, and trust.
