This unusual cat and rat partnership defied all expectations and formed an incredible bond in the process.

Ranj, an orange tabby, was found as a stray kitten by Maggie Szpot and her family in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Though Szpot had pet rats while Ranj was growing up, she was concerned that when she brought home two new rats, Peanut and her sister Mocha, his hunting streak might come out, she told The Dodo.

She couldn’t have been more mistaken.

“Peanut first met Ranj when he was a newborn,” Szpot explained. “I had taken Peanut and her sister out of their cage to play, and I had placed them in a fenced-in area for them to run around in, and Ranj had actually jumped inside to have a better look. He is always interested in new things… they immediately became fast friends, and Peanut followed Ranj everywhere.”

Mocha, on the other hand, never warmed up to Ranj – yet one video reveals how Peanut and the orange cat were inseparable. Peanut can’t help herself and climbs over Ranj constantly throughout the short clip.

“If Ranj went to eat from his food dish, Peanut would join him,” Szpot explained. “I believe those were the nicest times, when Peanut was so desperate to be with Ranj that she would go through anything to be with him.”

Peanut also enjoyed snuggling in Ranj’s soft hair and giving extremely affectionate licks (which the cat occasionally returned), according to Szpot. Ranj, being a cat, did require some alone time from time to time.

“There were moments when Peanut intruded too much into Ranj’s personal space, and he’d flee or climb onto anything off the ground to get away from her,” Szpot explained. “Peanut would actually crawl all over Ranj at times, and he didn’t like it. She never quite understood the concept of personal space, but Ranj was good at tolerating her antics!”

Domesticated rats, however, do not have lengthy lives, and Peanut passed away at two years old.

Ranj seemed to mourn his closest companion and all the amusement she brought with her following her passing, according to Szpot.

But don’t worry, he’s not lonely these days. Ranj, who will turn ten later this year, now has a new kitty companion to keep him company, in addition to Szpot’s two birds.

Despite the fact that he’ll never have another companion quite like Peanut.
