A cat was saved from being mauled by other animals and transferred to the Friends of Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control, Inc. shelter to be cared for. On the day of the rescue, the local staff saw that the cat did not appear to be alone because she was nursing, but they could not discover her offspring, so they advised the neighbors to contact the shelter if they heard or saw the kittens.

Staff at the shelter said:

“She exhibited all the characteristics of a nursing mother, yet her kittens were nowhere to be found.”

That same week the neighbors heard 5 little kittens meowing near a mobile home, one of the shelter volunteers, Mindy Brocato, was in charge of looking for the little ones and taking them to the shelter where they were reunited with their distraught mother whom they called Toodles.

When Toodles heard the meows, she immediately sat up attentively in search of where they came from. When one of the kittens was placed in her bed, she sniffed at it and meowed as she licked it to comfort him.

Recognizing their mother, the 5 kittens meowed and sought to snuggle up to her side, and the sweet mother lay down ready to nurse them to calm the crying of her little ones, immediately the kittens settled down to receive their dinner while Toodles watched them closely.

But not everything was in order for this feline family, that night the shelter received a call that warned of a kitten found in the same place.

Shelter staff said:

“A sixth kitten was discovered crying for his mother under the same mobile home where the first five were.”

Upon arrival at the shelter, the sixth kitten was reunited with the rest of the litter and immediately looked for its mother to receive food.

The staff added:

“Toodles seemed much more relaxed when this new baby arrived, Toodles and her babies are thriving, thanks in no small part to the caring and experienced foster home.”

Toodles doesn’t mind being supported with her babies for feeding. The kittens had some difficulty gaining weight and required supplemental feeding.

Now they are bigger and awake. “Together, the foster home and Toodles are raising these strong and happy little ones.”

Kittens that are a couple of months old, grown and looking very healthy, are almost ready to find a forever home.

The shelter commented:

“The first application the shelter received was for Toodles and the sixth kitten, Percy. How nice it is to have the mother selected for the first time, this especially warms our hearts as the mother cat is often the last to find a permanent home.”
