‘City the Kitty’ Cheers as Maryland to Become 2nd State to Ban Declawing

Gov. Larry Hogan of Maryland has signed a bill to ban cat declawing. Now Maryland is the second state (after New York) in the US to stop the barbaric practice. So, it’s a great day for cats and cat lovers everywhere! Furthermore, it’s also a great day for tireless cat crusader City the City, who has been fighting to stop declawing for over a decade.

“The cat declawing ban Hogan signed on Thursday will make Maryland just the second state to outlaw the increasingly controversial practice, which animal welfare advocates describe as cruel, unnecessary and inhumane,” wrote the Baltimore Sun.

Moreover, the Governor also signed other important bills affecting animal welfare.

“Hogan also signed several other animal welfare bills championed by groups like the Humane Society, including a ban on the sale of animal parts or pieces from endangered or imperiled wildlife, as well as a new law that requires owners who leave dogs outside during extreme weather to ensure they have access to shade or shelter.”

City the Kitty Shares the News of Declawing Ban

As you may know, City is a big lovable ginger kitty who once appeared on ‘My Cat From Hell’ with Jackson Galaxy, City the Kitty shared the news about Maryland on Instagram.

Notably, City the Kitty is a polydactyl (extra toes) part Manx and Bengal. At one time, he also appeared on the Kitten Bowl and Bad Dog. Over the years, the famous cat has been a constant advocate campaigning to end cat declawing. Looking back, he’s been working tirelessly for years through social media, billboards, petitions, and ongoing City the Kitty Nonprofit efforts.

“A huge victory for the future generations of cats!  Tomorrow the Governor of Maryland will sign the anti-declawing bill!!! Please give a huge thank you to @pawproject for making Maryland the 2nd state to ban this barbaric animal cruelty!

Thanks to ongoing efforts by champions like City the Kitty, now cats in Maryland won’t suffer needlessly. Possibly, this will give a big push to other states and cities considering a declawing ban too!

The Paw Project and Declawing

In 2014, City the Kitty started working with Dr. Jennifer Conrad, the veterinarian who started PawProject.org. For over two decades, the nonprofit has been working to educate the public, legislators and veterinarians about declawing. Likewise, the City the Kitty nonprofit helps get the word out about easy, humane alternatives to declawing.

“Unsuspecting cat guardians are often unaware that declawing is an amputation of a cat’s toes at the last joint. They do not realize that negative behavioral and health changes caused by declawing can be irreversible and permanent, in effect, trading one set of problems for another,” states the Paw Project website.

City the Kitty on My Cat From Hell (2010)

In 2010,  Galaxy arrived at the home of City the Kitty. At the time, he said it was like “walking into the lion’s den.” Back then, the adopted stray cat was ferocious and terrorizing girlfriends Shanna and Lori and Missy the cat. As you can see in the video below, he has huge polydactyl paws, and he was launching into the air at Shanna.

City the Kitty and Jackson Galaxy 

Then, Galaxy introduced a feathered bird toy. And, just like that, City’s boundless energy had an outlet. Afterward, he launched himself at the toy instead of his family. Also, the couple walked City on a harness more often. Thus, it further helped work out all that ‘Jungle cat’ energy which Bengals may often have. Next, Galaxy brought in a cat wheel, allowing him to run endlessly.

With more exercise and walks, City the Kitty wasn’t focused on Missy or attacking his humans anymore. In some cases, people may have considered resorting to declawing a cat like City, but there are easy solutions which don’t inflict pain on cats.
