Southon Rescue and Central Florida Fosters founder Dannielle Southon took in a 5-week-old kitten who needed specialized care. The feline has Manx syndrome and some congenital deformities. Part of her spine and her tail are fused together, giving the little girl limited mobility in her hindquarters.
Despite this condition, the kitten is determined to walk and does not allow any of this to stop her from her purpose. She was focused on getting well and being able to play like any normal kitty from the start.
Danielle said:
“She came in from the local animal services after being brought in as a stray with some pretty obvious issues. Her spine, tail, and leg bones were formed in this way while she was still in the womb.”
The little girl was called Minerva, but they call her Minnie. The kitten receives physiotherapy to improve her mobility and they also help her when she has to go to the bathroom. Minnie is a true fighter despite all that she must endure.
Although she is still very young for her age, Minnie has the heart of a brave warrior and she is always happy and up for some cuddles.
Danielle said:
“She sat on my lap purring and playing and enjoying life to the fullest.”
The kitten is determined to stay close to her favorite people at all times, even if they are in the bathroom.
Dannielle set up a nest in the bathroom to keep Minnie safe and comfortable while she oversees things in the morning, but Minnie prefers to be closer to her foster mom.
After visits to the vet and all the love from her adoptive family, Minnie feels much better, her stomach problems have healed, and within days of her rescue, she has become more playful and noisy than ever, she is a happy girl.
The kitten enjoys her newfound energy and explores every corner of her home. Her physical limitations do not prevent her from being happy.
Minnie has made great strides in a short time and her personality blossoms. She gets easily excited and crazy about her toys, and she often meows to get her human’s attention. She is not afraid to express her opinions.
Minnie loves her life as a spoiled indoor kitty and is constantly on the lookout for adventure. She likes to catch imaginary insects, jump like a bunny and climb despite her limitation.
Danielle added:
“She is a happy, mobile and active kitty who has no idea that she is ‘different’. She purrs and meows as soon as I get close to her. Her new favorite toy is these kitty springs. She’s obsessed.”
Danielle assures:
“We are working on her consistency and medication schedule, and we are also looking at how much sensation and use she has in her hind legs. My goal, as her adoptive mother, is to bring her to her healthiest state and then set Minnie up with the best chance of having her best life.”
